Birmingham School of Art with Eastside Projects Exhibition

Birmingham Rag Market Art Exhibition 5th – 9th April 2022

Level 5 Fine Art / Art and Design Eastside Projects – Live Project Market Values Exhibition
5-9th April, Rag Market, The Bull Ring
As part of their Live Project (centred around markets) with Eastside Projects, second year BA Fine Art and BA Art and Design students have been working hard to organise and develop work for their forthcoming exhibition Market Values. Within this exhibition they aim to uncov- er, explore and respond to the site, lives and people within and around the Bull Ring Markets. Through personal approach- es the works created aim to, in some way, present new opportunities for a market space and its people that are recovering from the effects of a pandemic.

Excellence in design is pursued through collaborating closely with our clients, consultant teams, contractors and end users. Innovation is cultivated through office-based and academic research into carbon reduction, reuse and the cultural contexts of each project.
David Kohn Architects is currently delivering major projects for New College Oxford, developer Lendlease, and the Province of Limburg, Belgium. Past projects include the V&A Photography Centre, developer Euroboden’s new offices in Berlin, A Room for London in collaboration with artist Fiona Banner, and an award-winning restaurant at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Birmingham Smithfield Markets
A collaborative project to rehouse Birmingham’s historic Bullring markets
Markets are ’where seasonal festivals and public events were held, as well as other civic functions. Markets, in other words, were public spaces in the fullest sense: the space of everyman – shared places in which anything could happen.’ – Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives, Carolyn Steel, 2008.
David Kohn Architects in collaboration with artist-run multiverse, Eastside Projects, is working with Birmingham City Council and developer Lendlease to rehouse the city’s historic Bullring Markets. The ongoing £65M project was won through an international design competition in 2020.
Smithfield has been the productive centre of markets and makers since the foundation of Birmingham and integral to its success as the ‘City of a Thousand Trades’. Today the markets retain a raw authenticity as a convergence of different cultures and atmospheres, giving the area a character which is hard to find elsewhere in the city. Smithfield Market has a different magic which is the starting point for a collaborative design project that will involve the existing market traders and local communities.
The new markets will be the centrepiece of the £1.5 billion Smithfield development, positioned adjacent to the Bullring and Digbeth, and a short walking distance from Birmingham’s existing New Street and future HS2 stations.
